About
MARIO AZZOPARDI (b.1944) is one of Malta's leading poets, a theatre director and a cultural journalist. He also writes short stories for young adults and he currrently heads the Malta Drama Centre, a state institution offering training in the performing arts for some 450 students, aged 4-60+.
He was co-founder of the Movement for the Promotion of Literature which introduced avantgarde genres and injected new life into a decadent Maltese literary scene in the Sixties.
His literature continues to be regarded as displaying a cutting edge style. His latest two books, Alicia Speaks from the Dead (2007) and Ciorni's Last Days (2009) are specified as young adult literature but have been acclaimed by many adult readers.
